Professor Sheikh MD MOSHARRAF HOSSAIN [1941 - 2021] Biography

 Professor Sheikh Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain is a distinguished scholar in Economics and Islamic Studies, widely respected for his lifelong dedication to Islamic scholarship, Qur’anic research, and academic leadership in Bangladesh. Guided by the principles of the Qur’an and Islamic ethical teachings, his work bridges the worlds of economic thought and Islamic intellectual tradition, offering meaningful insights into the integration of faith, ethics, and socio-economic development. His scholarship and leadership have earned him recognition as a thought leader, educator, and servant of knowledge committed to the advancement of both academic excellence and spiritual understanding.

He completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) and Master of Arts degrees in Economics from the University of Dhaka, one of the most prestigious institutions in Bangladesh. His strong groundin

Professor Sheikh Hossain possesses a distinguished and diverse academic foundation that reflects both intellectual depth and interdisciplinary breadth. He completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) and Master of Arts degrees in Economics from the University of Dhaka, one of the most prestigious institutions in Bangladesh. His strong grounding in economics was complemented by a deep engagement with classical Islamic scholarship, culminating in the attainment of a Kamil degree in Al-Qur’an from Dhaka Alia Madrasa.


From the early stages of his education, Professor Hossain exhibited exceptional academic brilliance. He consistently secured positions on the merit list of the East Pakistan Madrasa Education Board in the Dakhil, Alim, and Fazil examinations—an achievement that earned him a Gold Medal in recognition of his outstanding performance. In addition, his scholastic excellence was nationally acknowledged through his inclusion among the national merit scholars in both the Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) and Higher Secondary Certificate (H.S.C.) examinations.


This combination of rigorous training in modern economics and classical Qur’anic studies has endowed Professor Hossain with a rare blend of analytical, ethical, and philosophical insight, which continues to inform and enrich his academic and professional contributions.

His career commenced as a Lecturer in Economics at Kobirhat College and Mujib College (1979–1983), where his dedication to teaching and academic excellence quickly earned him the position of Head of the Department of Economics. These early years not only strengthened his expertise in economic theory and pedagogy but also reflected his commitment to nurturing young scholars and advancing higher education in Bangladesh.


In 1983, Professor Hossain joined the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh as an Assistant Director, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter in his professional life. His tenure at the Foundation is widely recognized for its lasting impact on academic research, Islamic scholarship, and institutional leadership.


Throughout his career at the Foundation, Professor Hossain held several key positions, including Deputy Director of the Translation and Compilation Department and Editor of the Publications Division. In these roles, he contributed significantly to the translation, publication, and dissemination of scholarly works that enriched Bangladesh’s intellectual and cultural heritage.


He also served as Editor of the Islamic Foundation’s academic and research journal, Islamic Foundation Patrika, and the monthly publication Agropothik. Under his editorial leadership, these journals became respected platforms for academic discourse, Islamic studies, and socioeconomic research, fostering dialogue among scholars, educators, and policy thinkers.


Through his vision and dedication, Professor Hossain rose to the positions of Deputy Director and later Acting Director, leading with integrity, strategic insight, and a steadfast commitment to educational advancement. His service continued until his retirement in 2005, marking the culmination of over two decades of distinguished academic and administrative leadership.


Professor Hossain’s career stands as a testament to his enduring contributions to economic education, Islamic research, and public service in Bangladesh, inspiring future generations of scholars and educators.

His scholarship has significantly enriched the research and publication portfolio of the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, establishing him as a

His research explores the profound role of the Qur’an in shaping ethical, social, and practical dimensions of human life, as well as the integration of Islamic principles into socio-economic development, offering meaningful insights into contemporary Islamic thought.


Beyond his scholarly endeavors, Professor Hossain has been deeply engaged in capacity-building and educational initiatives. He has served as a trainer in the Imam Training Programs organized by the Islamic Foundation and as a resource person in Islamic Bank Officers’ Training Programs, sharing his expertise in Qur’anic interpretation and ethical leadership. His knowledge and eloquence have also made him a respected lecturer at the National Mosque, Baitul Mukarram, where he regularly delivered discourses on applying Qur’anic teachings in everyday life.


Demonstrating his profound commitment to both scholarship and spiritual service, Professor Hossain served for nearly a decade as Imam of the Eid congregational prayers at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, reflecting his leadership, dedication to the community, and lifelong engagement with Islamic education and guidance.
